Rose

I lay in my bed, listening to Velma’s rhythmic snoring. But tonight, it’s not her snoring that keeps me up. It’s Antai.

He left for Lycon with Grandpa and the rest of the rescue party. But that was four days ago, and I’m worried sick. If all was well in Lycon, they would have returned at least a day ago, maybe sooner. Worst-case scenarios cloud my thoughts. What if they were attacked? What if something terrible happened? What if they’re d-?

Stop it, Rose. They’re fine, I tell myself. They have to be!

I’m so lost in my thoughts, I almost don’t hear it. The delicate crinkle of paper. I twist my head and watch as the white square of a letter slides quietly under the door. Then, silence. I stretch my upper body out of bed in order to grasp the note with my fingertips. I pull the covers over my head and speak with my mind.

Light.

A soft glow, seemingly without origin, illuminates the crinkled paper. It reads:
